Since the city is agriculturally based, it isn't surprising that some of the city's largest employers deal with the foods we eat. E&J Gallo Winery is the second-largest employer in the city, behind only Stanislaus County. The Modesto City Schools take up the third position, followed by Signature Fruit Company, Memorial Medical Center and Del Monte Foods. Other major Modesto employers include Stanislaus Food Products, Doctors Medical Center, Foster Farms, and the City of Modesto.
In 2000, the median household income for Modesto was $40,394. The unemployment rate was 6.5% in 2006. |
